Karşıyaka, Izmir
Karşıyaka is located in the west of Türkiye and is one of the coastal districts of the metropolitan city of İzmir. Its total area is 50.89 km2 with a 6 km long coastline and 350,000 inhabitants. The green area per capita is 4.66m2. The urban area consists of a total of 50412 dwellings and the average annual increase in population is 0.6%.
The Karşıyaka Municipality prepared its first Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) in 2011, then the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) in 2018 and finally the SECAP in 2021 [1]. In addition, the Municipality confirmed the “Green Building-Site-Business Guide” in 2022 [2]. This guide aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of our district by reducing our carbon footprint and transforming into a climate change resistant, adaptable city through energy efficiency, water resources protection, green infrastructure practices, recycling by reducing waste going to regular storage and spreading long-life cycle material use practices for buildings, sites and enterprises within our district.
Karşıyaka Municipality is a member of the World Health Organisation – Healthy Cities Network, ALDA European Association for Local Government, EUROMED European Mediterranean Cities Network and Local Governments for Sustainability and Biophilic Cities Union. Karşıyaka Municipality is the first signatory of the Covenant of Mayors in Türkiye and is the first local government from Türkiye to offer and publish SEAP.
